Photos : Tasty Salvadoran Cuisine In Queens
My culinary adventures is back to Queens for this week's post. Under the elevated No. 7 train, I ventured into this cute Salvadoran restaurant, Izalco. Even though I never had Salvadoran food before, I've been wanting to try their national dish – pupusas. I started out by ordering pupusas from the "national dishes" section on the menu. Pupusas are like El Salvador's snack food. It's a thick corn tortilla filled with combination of cooked pork, seasoned beans or a mixture of cheese filling. It served with curtido, a cabbage salad made with onion, cabbage and carrots.
I also ordered a Salvadoran drink called "horchata". It's a traditional drink made with rice, cinnamon, and moro. I've never had this before and it was really good! And now on to the entree dish. My fiance and I decided to share a entree plate – Salvadoran steak. They were corn tortilla, rice, shrimps and salad all together. It was very good and everything tasted fresh. At the end of the meal we were stuffed, satisfied and happy! So if you're looking for an authentic Salvadoran food. You'll have to try visiting Queens.

Sarah, it’s 12:45 am in California and you just made me officially hungry. Thanks for giving me a lunch idea for tomorrow. Next time go for breakfast and try the platanos fritos with casamiento (that’s black beans and rice mixed together). Also try the empanadas (made from banana) and pastelitos (like a hot pocket mixed with meat and vegetables). These last two are usually appetizers. Nice post.

Sounds amazing! I love your culinary adventures but I get so hungry every time I read them! You take such wonderful photos- you completely capture the experience. I know where I am going soon! Looking forward to your future adventures!!
@Ken- there are a lot of restaurants in NYC that don’t accept credit cards. I think it is to avoid credit card fees though I am not sure.

OMG… I’m drooling now over Salvadoran cuisine! It looks so delicious! One of the things I love about Queens is that it has a huge cuisine variation that you can literally taste different flavors from around the world in this city.

@Norbert – I know You can have Indian, Latin, Chinese, Korean and even more in Queens. I even saw tibetan & himalayan ones too
@Sergey –Haha, please look at them after you had your lunch then ;P. I just had Peruvian the night before this Salvadoran food for the 1st time. They’re really delicious as well. The raw fish was yumm.
@Lindsay – I bet you do the same, checking out new restaurant and trying out new food. You take very beautiful pictures as well. I just started using dslr in April. I’m still a newbie
. Yea, there will be more adventures coming up.. maybe cupcakes?
@Dennis – Thank you for stopping by, I like empanadas , they sell those in those Latin bakery in the morning. I usually pick it up since it’s cheap. Subscribe to my RSS for more food adventures
. Thanks again!
@Valentina – Hahah I can see your foodspootter will be like 10 pages long when you’re back to NYC. If I can find a Venezuelan place, I’ll check that out. Thank you!
@Ken – Yea steak was really delicious. A lot of restaurant doesn’t take credit card in Queens. Or even in chinatown. Manhattan takes most credit cards.
It’s common here in a smaller borough.

I had no idea about the cuisine in El Salvador, but it looks so good, especially those breads called pupsas. I’d love to try them
Hey, those bananas look pretty dangerous. Any fear they might fall off that thin rope?

No, we don't have a lot of foreign food. We have Chinese restaurants, Mexican food, some Japanese and that's about it. Maybe one Indian restaurant. Maribor is very small, maybe like a suburb of NY..
