Gelato – A Sweet local Delicacy In Italy
So what do I rave about the most to my family and friends when I came back from my Italy trip? It's the Gelato I have tried in different cities. Those who traveled to Italy know that one of the must have is a gelato. Gelato is an Italian version ice cream made with milk, sugar and eggs combined with different type of flavoring. However, it does not contain any cream so it has a much lower butterfat. When my fiance and I was there we've made it a habit to have gelato in every cities (Florence, Rome and Naples). When we're surrounded by great gelaterie everywhere, it's so hard not to have it every day. So I say to myself why not take time to indulge in the Gelato Heaven?
So what is the best gelato in Italy since we had so much? I think the answer depends on what kinds of gelato or flavor you like. We tried at Giolitti, Blue ice, Caffe Ponte Vecchio and more. Italy has many cafes that sells great gelato and I'm sure you can't wrong with that. Afterall it's very popular heavenly dessert that all Italians and tourist love.

Here are some of my list that can get you started on this local delicacy - Gelato. Enjoy!
1 - Giolitti
40, Via degli Uffici del Vicario. Near the Pantheon, Rome
Since 1890, Giolitti has attracted many locals and tourists. I heard that they have been using the same recipes since World War I. Interesting right? However, if you just buy a cone or a cup to go you can't sit inside.
2 - Blue Ice
Piazza Irnerio, 19, Rome
A Chain store throughout Rome. They offers many variety of flavors and it was excellent even this place is filled with tourists.
3 – San Crispino
Via Panetteria,42, near the Trevi Fountain, Rome
Try the signature San Crispino flavor with corbezzolo (wild-strawberry-tree honey from Sardinia). They don't come in a cone, because they believe that cones spoil the pureness of their gelato.
4 – Grom
Via delle Oche, 24-red 50122 Florence, Italy
The gelato is soft and smooth made with the best natural ingredients. So if you're in Florence, go look for Grom.
5 – Gelateria dei Neri
Via dei Neri, 26 50122 Florence, Italy
Another great gelato place in Florence. A delightful store just few minutes from the Piazza della Signoria. And, the gelato is excellent.

Oh, hey, yeah, I've been to the Grom in NYC, too. The vanilla was a little plain (and I love vanilla), but the lemon was awesome. You guys are very cute, and these pictures are technicolor masterpieces!

OH GOD that looks phenomenal. Honestly this is one of the more beautiful gelato posts I’ve seen. Fantastic pictures of the textures, ingredients, and colors.
There are a few gelato places here in Austin but I’m sure they cannot compare.

That looks so amazing! Gelato is one of thethings I miss most about Italy; I studied abroad there and gained so many pounds eating huge quantities. You’ve given me a powerful craving for it now!

No doubt that Gelato taste better in Italy. Very nice post and your photos really make the connection between words and flavor. Next time in LA I’ll recommend a place where you can get very authentic Gelato. All the best.

This looks very yummy
I remember Lily and I had some in Koper, our biggest port, which is very close to Italy. She loved it and still misses it. I on the other hand love the Taiwanese shaved ice and the hand made pao pao ice in Keelung

Wow! Now I’m craving for some gelato too. I’m with you on that Eat Pray Love moment. I’m sure I will have the same expression plastered on my face too when I’m there enjoying those cold desserts.

Gelato was my love in Italia. I basically ate it everyday, even 3x one day while in Roma. When I return to Italia, I will eat this everyday, the fragola (strawberry) and lampone (raspberry) combo. Here, in America, gelato doesn’t compare at all.

We need to find a gelateria in NYC, my friend took me to a place in West Village long time ago, it was good, but still cannot compare with authentic gelato in Italia

I do miss the ice cream I ate at Koper port in Slovenia.
Every time I saw Italy ice cream, it would remind me the sweet Summer time in Slovenia. But it’s funny that my boyfriend also misses our Taiwanese ice cream a lot. So maybe we always miss the things that we can’t get easily.

Ok, you know what is really weird??? That cafe PonteVecchio in Firenze picture you have?? I have one of that place too!!! I actually didn’t have their Gelato but was caught my eye was the way the cones were stacked. I thought it was awesome and so I took a few pictures. I am going to have to find it and put it up on the site so you can see it. Now we have sister photos – how funny!!

Hey Sarah – glad you’re having a great time. As you can see I’m catching up here. The gelato looks great. I’ve had it here in LA. There was this great italian place downtown in litte tokyo that had great gelato, but the restaurant didn’t make it and it closed. They had the best clams too. Great post, great pics.

Hey Dennis, thank you for checking out this post too. I know you're busy from time to time :D. I never had gelato in NY. The first time I had it was in Boston and then 2nd time is in Italy. When the weather get warmer, I'm going to find a gelato place here and treat myself.

Oh I love gelato! Especially on hot summer days in Italy. It is so delicious. When my sister and I were in Venice we found the best place at the square we were staying, which was small and out of the way (about 30min walk to San Marco). So tasty!
Your pictures are mouthwatering. I am craving gelato now even though the weather is freezing and miserable here
